The Verizon Center is a 20,000 seat NBA/NHL arena for Washington Wizards basketball and Washington Capitals hockey. Located in downtown Washington, D.C., design and construction were complicated by the presence of Metro tunnels runnnig adjacent to directly under the site. Work included extensive utility relocation, removal of 120,000 cubic yards of contaminated material, and the construction of a new entrance to the Gallery Place Metro station.
